New MD-PhD Student Group Founded: The Association of Diverse Physician-Scientists in Training

In late 2018 a group of Tri-I MD-PhD students officially launched The Association of Diverse Physician-Scientists in Training (ADePT) as an organization for students from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in science and medicine. Four students, together with faculty advisor Marcus Goncalves, MD, PhD, of WCM, comprise the inaugural leadedrship team of the group.

The student leadership board consists of current Tri-Institutional MD-PhD students Nneoma Adaku, Renan Aparicio, Camila Villasante, and Olivia Maguire. They kicked off the formation of the group on February 10, with a brunch at popular East Harlem eatery Amor Cubano (see picture below).

The ADePT Leadership Board shared this about the group:

The Association of Diverse Physician-scientists in Training (ADePT) is the Tri-I’s newest student organization, started in December 2018. We are a group of students from across the program years aiming to create a space within the MD-PhD program for students from backgrounds underrepresented in science and medicine. Our goals are to encourage community-building, advocacy, and mentorship. With the support of the program and under the guidance of our faculty mentor, physician-scientist Dr. Marcus Goncalves, we are planning an array of activities for the coming months--from Revisit weekend get-togethers to collaborations with other groups on campus like the Tri-I Minority Society and Rockefeller Inclusive Science Initiative. If you would like to be on our mailing list, please email Camila Villasante.

Dr. Goncalves had this to say about his involvement in ADePT:

I’m honored and excited to have an opportunity to guide this talented group of students. My goal is to encourage a family-style atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable sharing their joys and struggles as physician-scientists-in-training. They have chosen a long and emotionally challenging career path where mentorship is a key driver of success. Most of us can’t rely on family members to provide guidance because their experience with higher education is limited. Therefore, we will have to rely on each other and ADePT gives us a platform to do so.
