Fifth Year MD-PhD Student, Joshua Weiss, Receives NIH F30 Award

Joshua Weiss, a fifth year student in the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program, has been awarded an NIH F30 fellowship from the National Cancer Institute for his project "Investigating the Role of Adipocyte Lipolysis in Melanoma Progression.”

Josh is a member of the lab of Richard White, MD, PhD, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in the Department of Cancer Biology and Genetics.

The White Lab recently discovered that stromal adipocytes promote melanoma proliferation and invasion through the transfer of lipids. Josh’s research is focused on elucidating the mechanism by which melanoma cells induce lipid release from neighboring adipocytes. By blocking the ability of melanoma cells to acquire lipids from the tumor microenvironment, these studies strive to develop novel strategies to treat cancer.
