Rebecca Gelfer, MD-PhD Student, Receives Award from the American Society of Hematology

Rebecca Gelfer, a fourth year student in the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program, has received a 2023 Graduate Hematology Award from the American Society of Hematology (ASH).

Ms. Gelfer's ASH Graduate Award will support her work in the Levine Lab at Gerster Sloan Kettering Graduate School where she is investigating the role of oncogenic Nras in IDH1 mutant AML leukemogenesis and therapeutic responsiveness.

Giving more context for her work, Rebecca explains that "oncogenic Nras mutations are the most consistent predictor of lack of response to differentiation therapy in IDH mutant AML, leading to significantly worse patient outcomes. Utilizing two novel, orthogonal mouse models of both genetically engineered mice and patient derived xenografts, I am probing the mechanisms by which oncogenic Nras drives IDH1 mutant AML leukemogenesis and therapeutic resistance."
